Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Program and Project Supervisor, the Mechanical Engineer will conduct on-site compliance inspections of the Energy Commission’s licensed power plants (facilities) and ancillary facilities, prepare reports and recommendations to ensure that the facilities are constructed and operated in accordance with Energy Commission certification requirements.

The incumbent may prepare analyses involved in the planning, siting, design, construction, and operation of power generation plants and related facilities. With training, the incumbent will perform their duties and perform other related work. The incumbent may function as a member or a leader of an interdisciplinary team or coordinate the efforts of representatives of various governmental agencies.

Working Conditions

This position provides hybrid telework opportunities. Beginning July 1, 2025, employees may be required to work in-person four days per week under the Energy Commission's telework policy currently under development as required by Executive Order N-22-25 and current CalHR guidance. CEC will review requests for exemptions on a case-by-case basis, with consideration to operational needs and the benefits of in-person interaction. Teleworking is only available for employees who reside in California. You must be located in California and provide your in-state address prior to your start date. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. Occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

1) Engineer-in-Training Certification or Professional Engineer License.

2) Experience with thermal power plant and battery energy storage system design, construction, and operation.

3) Experience with the California Building Standards Code.

4) Experience with performing inspections at industrial/and or power generating facilities related to NFPA standards and Cal/OHSA regulations.

5) Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
